It must be the silly season again !
The latest missive from 'The Hillarys Team' is a 50% off promotion on three colours of basswood shutters. How crazy can it get ?
Shutters are not particularly lucrative at the best of times, partly because conversion rates are lower but mainly because of the time taken to fit with the necessary precision - not a job for the faint hearted.
What will a half price promotion achieve :
- for the odd order taken in these colours, advisors will be unhappy at the commission earned for the time taken.
- every sale for the colours that people really want will be a much harder sell because customers will feel that they are being ripped off.
- in general the market perception of the cost / value of shutters will be seriously undermined.
Why cannot marketing people see beyond the headline impact of '50% off' and realise the harm that it does in the longer term ?

Last year, i was due to go on a shutter course and 3 times it got cancelled. By then a couple of other advisors I know who had done the course warned me that shutters were a nightmare, so when my then fsm contacted me to book another course I declined. His exact words were, I dont blame you mate. Ernie, happy doing roofs and blinds.

They're very different and do need a different mind set to banging out verticals all day long. Like anything new, you've got to do several to get the hang of them, but I can easily fit £3k-£4k in a day. I've a current order for 14 at £5,125 which I'll fit in a day with my sons help. What else could you fit for that value in a day? As I said, they are different, but no more so than moving from simple rollers & verticals to shaped roof

Shutters do take a certain mindset - confidence in high ticket sales, patience and attention to detail in fitting - but the result can be very rewarding and you do learn with experience. They will never be a 'quick fit' like banging up core product but they do get easier. However, even with experience, shutters are not particularly lucrative and the thought of shutters at half price is about as motivating as core product at 3 for £ 99 !

Just got my commission statement through, and there's only 2 jobs on it - cr@p week me thinks . Unfolded page and commission totals £919.16 as both were shutter jobs ;D ;D ;D ;D
