Like most of us, I use a combination square for marking out shaped blinds. The problem I've always found is the 12" steel rule being too big when trying to measure in to the top of the blinds.
My tip, I've bought a second combination square, less then a tenner at B&Q, and cut the steel rule in to 8.5cm and 10cm lengths, plus the left over bit. I now draw a 1 or 1.5cm parallel line on the hypotenuse, set the 8.5cm rule to 1 or 1.5cm in, then run it down the edge of the vertical beam until the rule meets the parallel line, and there's the top of the blind. ;D
