European Capital, which has €2.8bn (£2.2bn) under management and is listed on the London Stock Exchange, last week pulled out of a £120m deal to buy the School Travel Group (STG) at the final hour on the instructions of its parent company. European Capital's UK managing director of buy-outs, Simon Henderson, who was poached from rival mid-market firm Barclays Private Equity, is now planning to leave the fund, while other London-based staff are said to be looking for new jobs, sources said. The decision follows a move by transatlantic rivals MidOcean Partners last month to wind down its British operations because of the deteriorating economic climate and high cost of debt. American Capital opened its London outpost in 2005 to provide debt and equity capital for "one-stop" buy-outs. The fund will now concentrate on its debt and mezzanine finance business. Some say European Capital will now want to clear out its seven-company European portfolio as quickly as possible without holding a fire-sale. It has already appointed corporate finance house Baird to sell the weighing machine manufacturer Avery Weigh-Tronix for around £100m. European Capital's abrupt withdrawal from the auction of STG and Kingswood school adventure travel businesses threw the sale process into disarray. The fund was close to an exclusivity deal with Bowmark, the private equity owners of STG and Kingswood. PwC has restarted the process with three other private equity firms. European Capital had been vying with HBOS integrated finance in the final stages of the auction. Last night, American Capital had not returned calls for comment. OOPS
